SAIPAN — The Department of Public Safety is warning the public not to tamper with power lines or remove materials containing copper wire as crews work to restore power across the islands, the agency said in a Thursday advisory.
Individuals caught tampering with power lines or copper-wire materials may be arrested and face theft-related charges, DPS said.
Tampering with power lines and electrical materials delays repair efforts and prolongs power restoration to the community, the agency said. Materials found on the ground should not be removed because they may still be salvageable and needed for ongoing repair operations.
DPS asked the public to call 911 immediately if they observe anyone tampering with power lines or materials used to generate or restore power.
“Your cooperation helps ensure crews can safely and efficiently restore power to affected areas,” the agency said.
