USACE Active on Saipan Debris Removal; Residents Asked to Sort Into Six Categories

SAIPAN – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in coordination with CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is actively conducting residential debris removal across Saipan as Super Typhoon Sinlaku recovery enters its 38th day.

Residents are asked to place properly sorted debris along the public right-of-way and to avoid blocking roadways, fire hydrants, or utility meters. Crews are working through 10 sectors on a staggered schedule that runs through Sunday, June 22, according to a Joint Information Center update Friday.

Debris should be separated into six categories: vegetative debris such as branches, leaves, logs, and plants; construction and demolition debris including drywall, lumber, concrete, bricks, roofing, carpet, and furniture; sheet metal debris including roofing and tin; household hazardous materials such as paints, oils, batteries, chemicals, pesticides, and cleaning supplies; electronics including televisions, computers, stereos, radios, phones, printers, and solar panels; and appliances and white goods such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, water heaters, and air conditioners.

Regular household trash will not be collected as part of this operation. Residents are asked to continue using their normal waste disposal services for bagged garbage, food waste, paper, and packaging.

Properly separating debris helps crews work faster, keeps everyone safe, and protects the environment, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.
