SAIPAN — For the first time since before Super Typhoon Bavi, no marine advisories are in effect for the Marianas, with the Small Craft Advisory expiring Sunday morning and left unrenewed in the National Weather Service’s 6 p.m. forecast as the typhoon’s westerly swell continues to diminish.
Combined seas are down to 6 to 7 feet tonight and falling, NWS said. The High Surf Advisory lapsed at 4 a.m. Sunday and the high rip current risk ended late Saturday night.
The break may not last long. A new southwesterly swell will start to build Monday, and how quickly it arrives depends on the strength and track of Invest 97W, a disturbance the weather service said it is monitoring closely.
The week opens wet. Tonight brings scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms with a 50% chance and lows around 75. Monday is cloudy with numerous showers and a 60% chance, highs around 86, followed by a 30% chance Monday night. Tuesday holds a 50% shower chance with highs around 88 as winds turn southwest at 15 to 20 mph.
On the water, seas ease to 5 to 6 feet Monday before the southwest swell nudges them back to around 7 feet by Tuesday night.
Monday brings another round of midday minus tides: -0.8 feet at Tanapag Harbor at 12:41 p.m., -0.5 feet at Rota at 12:33 p.m. and -0.2 feet at Tinian at 12:16 p.m.
