SAIPAN – Vessels sunk and wrecked by Super Typhoon Sinlaku are being pulled from the waters of the Port of Saipan in a Coast Guard-led salvage operation, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.
The Coast Guard is coordinating the vessel-removal effort with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, FEMA, the CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources, T&T Marine Salvage and OSROCO, using salvage diving, mechanical removal and other specialized operations to clear storm-damaged vessels from the waterway.
The service said the work will reduce hazards to navigation and the environment and restore safe access for Saipan’s mariners and residents. A photo released with the announcement shows a heavily encrusted vessel being raised at the seaport by crane, with a containment boom deployed around the operation.
“We remain Semper Paratus — Always Ready — to serve our communities and work alongside our partners across the Blue Pacific,” the Coast Guard said.
