DPS: Use Insurance for Storm-Related Vehicle Damage; BMV Remains Closed

SAIPAN — The Department of Public Safety is asking residents to contact their insurance companies for vehicle damage caused by Super Typhoon Sinlaku, and reminded the public that 911 should not be used to report storm-related vehicle damage, in a public advisory issued Tuesday.

DPS said officers will only respond to and document incidents involving vehicle damage when it is the result of a criminal act or a roadway traffic collision. Storm-related damage should be handled through the affected vehicle owner’s insurance company for assistance and claims processing, the agency said.

“The Department appreciates the public’s cooperation in ensuring that emergency lines remain available for urgent situations,” DPS said in the advisory.

In a separate public notice issued the same day, DPS said the Bureau of Motor Vehicles remains closed until further notice due to the impacts of the storm. Late fees will not be applied during the closure period, the agency said.

DPS said it will provide updates on BMV operations as they become available.
