SAIPAN — The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation is urging every customer using a generator or solar system to call CUC immediately, warning that failure to do so could put power line crews in serious danger.
The hazard is known as backfeed — a phenomenon where generators and solar systems send electricity back into power lines that appear to be off. The invisible charge can kill CUC line crews, metering technicians and members of the public working near those lines.
Customers with a generator or solar system should call CUC at 670-664-4282 and provide their CUC account number or electric meter number. The call center is available 24 hours a day.
CUC said the information is critical to protecting staff as they work around the clock to restore power across Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
