SAIPAN – FEMA has processed 8,753 registrations and disbursed $7.46 million in Individuals and Households Program funding one month after Super Typhoon Sinlaku struck the Marianas, the CNMI Joint Information Center reported Friday.
The bulk of the IHP funding, $6.99 million, went to Other Needs Assistance covering transportation, medical, dental, funeral and personal property expenses. Housing Assistance accounted for the remaining $460,030.90, according to the JIC.
The U.S. Small Business Administration has received 396 loan applications and provided $1.5 million in disaster loans to date.
The Sustainment of Temporary Resilience and Operational Needs on Ground mission has installed 403 tents and 24 temporary roofs across Saipan and Tinian, the JIC reported. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved 662 residents for emergency roofing, with 26 roofs installed so far.
USACE and CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management launched residential debris removal operations May 13 starting in southern Saipan villages. The six-week sweep is scheduled to move from Koblerville north to Marpi across 10 sectors, with all areas covered by June 20. Total debris is estimated at 350,000 cubic yards.
The Army Corps has also installed 109 generators to keep hospitals, water systems, shelters and communications operational, and 18 modular classrooms are scheduled for installation at Northern Marianas College.
CUC reported 631 power poles down across Saipan, with 107 replaced. The utility also counted 552 transformers and 705 crossarms damaged. Current generation capacity stands at 34 megawatts, exceeding the pre-storm peak demand of approximately 30 megawatts, but distribution infrastructure repairs continue to limit full restoration.
On Tinian, all feeders remain offline with 1,059 customers without power. Feeder assessments are 90% complete and CUC and Guam Power Authority teams continue to assess the distribution system.
Saipan water production sits at 84% of normal output, with 92% of customers receiving 24-hour water service. A boil water notice remains in effect on Saipan. Tinian’s boil water notice was cancelled May 6.
The CNMI shelter population stood at 195 Friday, a decrease of 19 from the previous report.
