SAIPAN – The 19th CNMI State Board of Education will hold a special meeting Wednesday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at the PSS Disaster Program Office in Puerto Rico, with an agenda spanning the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget, school reopening and graduation plans, disaster recovery and a personnel matter to be taken up in executive session.
Under unfinished business, the board is set to receive an update on the submitted PSS FY 2027 budget proposal and a recommendation from the Commissioner of Education on the remainder of the school year. The COE proposal will come before the board for approval with supporting justification, alongside updates on operations at KES and Da’ok Academy and a discussion of student health, wellness and safety concerns tied to extended time away from campus.
The disaster recovery portion of the agenda includes campus assessments, current office performance and capacity, and the status of remaining Super Typhoon Yutu projects from 2018. The board will also review a proposed organizational chart.
Under new business, the agenda lists an update on the SY 25-26 instructional days and calendar, a proposed Summer School Program seeking board approval, a discussion of disaster pay, and an update on a memorandum of understanding with Isla Community Health.
The board may go into executive session to consider a personnel matter regarding the employment status of the Commissioner of Education and a 2018 grievance, pursuant to 1 CMC Section 9912.
Public comments are limited to 30 minutes total with three minutes per speaker per board policy, and written comments will also be accepted.
