NMC Outlines Four-Step Plan to Complete Spring 2026 Semester After Typhoon Sinlaku

SAIPAN — Northern Marianas College Acting Dean of Academic Programs and Services Ajani Burrell has outlined a four-step approach to concluding the Spring 2026 semester following Typhoon Sinlaku, aiming to balance academic integrity with flexibility for students and instructors dealing with the storm’s aftermath.

In a message to NMC students, Burrell acknowledged the situation is imperfect but said the college sought a solution that worked for most students and instructors while allowing departments to tailor accommodations where needed.

Under the plan, instructors will update student grades in NMC Online through Week 12, covering April 6 through April 12, by noon on Friday, May 1. Students will be notified that grades have been updated by 5:00 p.m. the same day.

Students who are unsatisfied with their standing will have until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, to formally request an Incomplete grade — referred to as the I-Route — from their instructors via email. Students who receive an Incomplete will have up to six months to complete pending coursework assigned by their instructor.

Students who do not select the I-Route by the May 15 deadline will receive their updated grade as their final grade for the semester. Final grades will be posted in Portal+ by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18.

Some programs or courses may have specific requirements. Students will be notified directly by their instructors or departments if additional guidance applies.

NMC leadership is also working with federal and local officials to ensure Pell Grant awards and other financial aid disbursements are not affected during this period. Students with questions are directed to the FAQ sheet sent to their NMC student email or to contact their instructor or academic advisor.
