SAIPAN — Governor David M. Apatang declared Tropical Storm Condition I for Saipan and Tinian at 1:00 PM Tuesday as Tropical Depression 08W strengthened into Tropical Storm Higos and moved toward the Commonwealth.
The declaration was made in consultation with the CNMI Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the National Weather Service Guam. Tropical Storm Condition I means tropical storm conditions, including winds of 39 miles per hour or greater, are expected or occurring.
The storm system was moving toward the CNMI with its center located approximately 25 miles south of Tinian and 35 miles south-southwest of Saipan at the time of the declaration.
Government offices remain open and normal operations continue at this time, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said. Residents are urged to stay alert, monitor official updates and be prepared for periods of heavy rain, gusty winds and localized flooding.
