SAIPAN – The CNMI Emergency Operations Center cancelled the high surf advisory and high rip current risk at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and the small craft advisory at 5:45 a.m., ending the run of marine warnings that began over the weekend.
Surf along west-facing reefs has fallen below the hazardous 9-foot level, the EOC said, though southwesterly monsoon swell will keep surf elevated at 6 to 8 feet over the next day or two before gradually decreasing through the rest of the week. Satellite altimetry shows seas have dropped below the hazardous 10-foot mark in Marianas coastal waters and are expected to subside to around 5 feet by Wednesday.
Governor David M. Apatang advised the public to continue monitoring the latest forecasts to ensure safe operations on the water.
The cancellations, issued by the EOC State Warning Point based on National Weather Service Guam data, close out a stretch that kept swimmers off the west reefs and small vessels in harbor through the weekend as swell from the monsoon pattern and Tropical Depression 19W pushed seas to 10 feet. The State Warning Point operates around the clock at 237-8000 or 664-8000.
