Luta Cares Asks Community to Fill a Backpack for Rota’s Children

SAIPAN — Luta Cares is asking the community to fill a backpack with basic school supplies for the children of Luta, with all donated backpacks headed to the island before Thursday, Aug. 20, for distribution ahead of the new school year.

Families on Rota, which took the direct hit from Super Typhoon Bavi, are facing the added expenses of repairs and damages while preparing their children to return to school, the organization said.

“We know that many of us are struggling too. We all have bills, responsibilities, and challenges of our own,” Luta Cares said. “We may not be able to fix everything, but together, we can help lighten one burden.”

Donors can fill a backpack for an elementary, junior high or high school student. For elementary students, the group suggests a backpack, notebook, pencils, crayons and markers. For junior high and high school students, suggested supplies include a backpack, filler paper, a binder, pocket folders, pencils, a ruler and notebooks.

For those who want to help but do not have time to shop, monetary donations are also welcome through the group’s GoFundMe campaign at gofund.me/8a5fb7cef and will go toward purchasing backpacks and supplies. “Every amount, big or small, can help us fill another backpack,” the group said.

“One backpack. A few school supplies. A whole lot of love,” Luta Cares said. “Together, let’s send our children back to school with the supplies they need and the reminder that their community cares.”
