King-Hinds says Trump address underscored stakes for CNMI in Washington

Saipan — CNMI Delegate Kimberlyn King-Hinds said this week that President Donald Trump’s address to Congress served as a reminder that decisions made in Washington can directly shape opportunities and challenges for families and communities in the Commonwealth.

In a newsletter update, King-Hinds said she attended the address on Tuesday and spent time before the speech meeting with Speaker Mike Johnson, Cabinet members, and fellow members of Congress to discuss CNMI priorities.

King-Hinds said those conversations reinforced the importance of making sure the Commonwealth’s needs are heard and considered in the nation’s capital.

“As the nation’s priorities were outlined, I was thinking about the CNMI and how these issues impact our families and communities,” King-Hinds said.

She said the speech highlighted how federal policy decisions can have direct local consequences and said she remains focused on keeping the CNMI’s interests in front of federal policymakers.

“The SOTU reminded me that every decision here in Congress can create opportunities, or challenges, for the CNMI,” she said. “I am committed to keeping our voice front and center, advocating for policies that strengthen our communities, and building a brighter future for us all.”

Her remarks reflect the broader reality facing the Commonwealth, where decisions made in Washington can affect everything from federal funding and economic policy to immigration, defense, and infrastructure priorities.

For the CNMI’s lone representative in Congress, access to House leadership, Cabinet officials, and fellow lawmakers remains a key part of pushing island concerns into national policy discussions that might otherwise overlook the territories.

King-Hinds’ message emphasized continued engagement in Washington and a focus on making sure the CNMI remains part of the conversation as national priorities take shape.
