FEMA: Read Your Letter Carefully — It May Not Be a Final Decision

SAIPAN – The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reminding Super Typhoon Sinlaku survivors who applied for disaster assistance to read any letters they receive from the agency carefully, as the correspondence may not represent a final decision on their application.

A FEMA letter may explain the status of an application and request additional information needed to continue processing a case, the agency said in a public message.

The letter may request documents such as proof of identity, proof of occupancy or ownership, insurance information, receipts or repair estimates. If applicants see the word “OR” between requested documents, they may need to provide only one of the items listed, the agency said.

Survivors with insurance may still be eligible for FEMA assistance for disaster-related expenses not covered by their insurance policy, FEMA said.

Applicants should keep their FEMA application number and disaster number in a safe place for future reference.

Those with questions or who need help understanding a letter can contact FEMA at 800-621-3362 or 671-735-1050, or visit a Survivor Recovery Center on Saipan, Tinian or Rota for in-person assistance.

FEMA emphasized the importance of responding quickly to avoid delays in application processing.
