DEQ Issues Water Disinfection Guide as Boil Water Notice Remains in Effect After Sinlaku

SAIPAN — The CNMI Division of Environmental Quality is advising residents on how to disinfect non-potable water using household bleach as the Boil Water Notice remains in effect following Typhoon Sinlaku.

DEQ said disinfecting non-potable water is essential for hygiene uses such as brushing teeth and showering, where water comes into contact with the body, and helps reduce exposure to bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. When boiling is unavailable, residents may use regular unscented household bleach such as Clorox.

Residents should add bleach according to container size, mix thoroughly, then allow the solution to stand in a covered container away from sunlight for at least 30 minutes before use. DEQ cautions that only the recommended amount should be used, as too much bleach can be harmful.

For clear water, the recommended bleach amounts are 3 drops per gallon, 15 drops per 5 gallons, 1.5 teaspoons per 55 gallons, 3 teaspoons per 100 gallons, 5 tablespoons per 500 gallons, and a half cup per 1,000 gallons. For cloudy water, double the amount: 6 drops per gallon, 30 drops per 5 gallons, 1 tablespoon per 55 gallons, 2 tablespoons per 100 gallons, a half cup per 500 gallons, and 1 cup per 1,000 gallons.
