SAIPAN — The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation will conduct smoke and dye testing in Koblerville from June 17 to 30, on weekdays only, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., to verify which customers in the area are connected to CUC’s sewer system.
CUC said certain roads will close during the testing so wastewater operators can safely access the manholes. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution in the area or take alternate routes.
In a dye test, crews introduce a nontoxic dye into the toilets and cleanouts of participating customers, then monitor CUC sewer lines for signs of the dye. If the dye shows up in CUC’s lines within a customer’s area, the customer is informed of the connection and the data is sent to the Billing Department for proper billing. Customers should expect a visit from CUC wastewater operators requesting access before the dye test is performed.
In a smoke test, crews force nontoxic smoke into sewer system access points. The smoke travels through connected pipes and reveals leaks, breached utility holes, cracks, uncapped lines, and other defects, and can help locate unknown pipe sections such as cleanouts, downspouts, and sump pumps.
CUC said the smoke is nontoxic, nonhazardous, and made specifically for this purpose. It leaves no residue or stains and has no effect on plants or animals. The smoke is not expected to enter homes, but if it does, it will have a distinct odor and should clear within a few minutes with proper ventilation. CUC advised residents that all plumbing fixture drain traps must be filled with water before the test.
CUC said it aims to conduct the testing efficiently while minimizing disruption, and that the effort reflects its commitment to providing reliable wastewater services.
