SAIPAN — The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality has issued a red flag advisory for Tank Beach after water samples showed bacteria levels exceeding CNMI marine water quality standards, the bureau reported in its weekly assessment for the week of June 3.
BECQ advised the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of Tank Beach for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified. The site is identified in the bureau’s monitoring system as NEB 06.
The samples contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria known as enterococci, which exceeded the standards, BECQ said. The bureau said the bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water. It noted that studies have shown stormwater runoff in tropical environments may also carry the bacteria from the natural environment, which may not be directly associated with public health concerns.
BECQ analyzed samples from eight east and south recreational beaches this week. The bureau said it red-flagged the location to adequately address public health concerns.
Marine water quality reports are posted at www.deq.gov.mp/beach-advisories.html. BECQ said it welcomes inquiries about beach water quality and encouraged the public to call 664-8500 with questions.
