SAIPAN — Search and rescue teams are actively searching for a 52-year-old man who went missing in the water at Sugar Dock Monday, the Department of Public Safety said.
DPS received a report of a swimming-related incident at approximately 11:37 a.m. involving two people who entered the water in the area of the channel. Preliminary investigation revealed that at around 9:30 a.m., the two swimmers were attempting to locate a pole on the reef when they encountered high tide and strong ocean currents, which began pulling them toward the channel.
The swimmers attempted to swim toward the reef, and during the crossing one of them experienced difficulty and became unresponsive. The other individual attempted to assist and performed rescue efforts before swimming to shore to seek emergency help.
Personnel from the DPS Marine Patrol Section and the DFEMS Search and Rescue Unit are conducting search and rescue operations. The man remains missing.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
