MANGILAO, Guam – The Guam Department of Agriculture’s Forestry and Soil Resources Division and LOVE Guam will hold a community tree planting at As Gadao Plantation in Malesso’ on Saturday, August 29, with stipends of $20 an hour for eligible volunteers.
The event runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., meeting at the As Gadao trail head entrance along Route 4. Volunteers will plant hardy native trees, including ifit, niyoron, panao, talisai and nanasu, in designated spots to build natural barriers against invasive species and soil runoff in the Manell Geus watershed, where the plantation sits.
Stipends are available to U.S. citizens 18 and older who sign in before 8:30 a.m. and complete a liability waiver and a W-9 form on arrival.
“Every tree we plant at As Gadao is an investment in Guam’s future,” Agriculture Acting Director Glenn Takai said. “Our forestry team is restoring our watersheds, protecting our native ecosystem, and building resilience against invasive species one sapling at a time.”
Forestry and Soil Resources Division Chief Christine Fejeran said every ifit, niyoron and talisai planted strengthens the natural barriers protecting soil and native species. “This isn’t just a planting event, it’s landscape-scale restoration in action,” she said.
