SAIPAN – The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation will conduct smoke and dye testing of sewer lines in Koblerville from Wednesday, August 26 through Friday, September 4, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., to verify which customers in the area are connected to the CUC sewer system.
Testing covers Ahu Drive, Paksiu Court, Atmayas Street and Charakiles Court. Some roadways will be closed during testing so wastewater operators can access manholes, and CUC advised motorists to slow down, use caution or take alternate routes.
For the dye test, crews introduce nontoxic dye into toilets and cleanouts of participating customers and watch CUC sewer lines for it. Customers whose dye appears in the lines will be informed of their connection, and the data goes to the Billing Department for what CUC called proper billing. Wastewater operators will visit homes to request access before performing a dye test.
The smoke test forces nontoxic smoke into sewer access points to reveal leaks, cracks, uncapped lines and unknown pipe sections. CUC said the smoke leaves no residue, doesn’t harm plants or animals, and isn’t expected to enter homes; if it does, it has a distinct odor and clears within minutes with ventilation. Residents should fill all plumbing fixture drain traps with water before the testing period.
