CUC Runs Smoke and Dye Tests in Koblerville Through Friday; Fill Your Drain Traps

SAIPAN — The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation is conducting dye and smoke tests in Koblerville this week to verify whether customers in the area are connected to the sewer system, with testing along Ahu Drive, Paksiu Court, Atmayas Street and Charakiles Court running Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Certain roadways will be closed during the testing period to allow wastewater operators to access manholes, CUC said. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution in the area or take alternative routes.

Residents should expect a visit from CUC’s wastewater operators requesting access before dye tests are performed. In a dye test, nontoxic dye is introduced into the toilets and cleanouts of participating customers, and operators monitor sewer lines for signs of the dye. If it appears in CUC’s lines, the customer will be informed of their connection and the data will be sent to the Billing Department for proper billing, the utility said.

The smoke test forces nontoxic smoke into sewer system access points, revealing pipe leaks, breached utility holes, cracks, uncapped lines and other defects, and locating unknown pipe sections such as cleanouts, downspouts and sump pumps.

CUC said the smoke is nontoxic and nonhazardous, leaves no residue or stains, and has no effects on plants or animals. It is not expected to enter homes, but if it does, it will carry a distinct odor and should clear within a few minutes with proper ventilation. Residents are advised to fill all plumbing fixture drain traps with water before the test.
