CUC: Beach Road Odor in Chalan Laulau Is Storm Debris, Not Sewage

SAIPAN — That sewage-like smell along Beach Road in Chalan Laulau is not coming from the sewer system, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation said Friday.

CUC said it has received reports of an unpleasant, sewage-like odor in the Chalan Laulau area, including near Triple J Motors. The utility determined the odor is not originating from the wastewater collection or treatment system.

Instead, the smell is associated with a pile of storm debris, including branches and other vegetation, that accumulated along the shoreline following the recent super typhoons. The debris, which is covered with seaweed, sits along the shoreline across from the S-11 sewer lift station area and the Quartermaster traffic light.

Current southwest wind conditions may be carrying the odor from the debris toward nearby areas, CUC said, resulting in the reported sewage-like smell.

The utility reassured the community that the odor is not related to a sewage system issue and thanked residents for their patience.
