DPW Offering Free Rooftop Solar Safety Inspections Ahead of Storm Season

SAIPAN — The CNMI Department of Public Works Building Safety Code Division is offering free inspections for homes and buildings with rooftop solar panels to help ensure the systems meet International Building Code wind-load requirements and CNMI typhoon-resistance standards.

The division said the inspections are aimed at homeowners with new solar installations, owners of older systems installed before the 2018 adoption of the IBC, and anyone unsure whether their system meets typhoon standards.

Inspection teams will review wind-load anchorage, racking and fastener conformity, roof attachment safety and compliance with IBC and CNMI typhoon-resistant standards.

The division said all solar installations and related construction must comply with the Commonwealth Building Safety Code, including the International Building Code 2018 and the International Solar Energy Provisions, as well as the Tropical Energy Code. Permits and plan approvals are required before starting any work, and failure to comply may result in fines and stop work orders.
