SAIPAN — A dry weather pattern will hold across the Marianas this week with spotty light showers and moderate trade winds, according to the National Weather Service in Guam’s weekly Regional Weather Outlook.
Winds are expected to ease through the middle and latter part of the week, raising the possibility of island-effect showers and afternoon convection. Otherwise, forecasters expect fair weather through the weekend, with combined seas of 3 to 5 feet, surf of 4 to 6 feet and a moderate risk of rip currents.
The drier conditions over the Marianas contrast with a wetter pattern across eastern Micronesia, where showers and thunderstorms are near or over Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Majuro and are expected to continue through much of the week. Fair weather with light winds and spotty showers prevails across Yap and Palau.
There are no tropical cyclone threats within the NWS Guam area of responsibility through the weekend. Tropical Storm Jangmi, well northwest of Guam and outside the area of responsibility, passed over Okinawa and is moving northeast along southern Japan as it weakens. Forecasters noted the showery pattern across eastern Micronesia could give rise to one or more weak disturbances in the coming week, but no significant development is expected at this time.
The outlook noted no drought concerns regionally, though a drier trend is anticipated across western Micronesia, including Palau and Yap State, into at least mid-June. The Regional Weather Outlook was prepared by Warning Coordination Meteorologist Landon Aydlett.
