SAIPAN — The CNMI Department of Public Works is reminding residents that regular household waste mixed into a typhoon debris pile is illegal dumping under CNMI law, punishable by fines under 2 CMC §3416.
Regular household waste includes bagged garbage, food waste, and household packaging such as boxes, takeout containers, bottles, cans, and snack packaging, DPW said. Only typhoon-related debris belongs at curbside for collection by USACE crews.
Most of Saipan’s private waste haulers are now operational and residents with existing waste collection services should continue to use them, DPW said.
For residents without waste collection service, the Marpi Landfill and the Lower Base Refuse Transfer Station and Material Recovery Facility are open and accepting household waste. Disposal for residents is currently free at both locations.
Both facilities operate daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a closure from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. Both can be reached at (670) 322-2745 or (670) 322-2760.
Residents who need special assistance moving waste or debris can call DPW at (670) 235-9570 to ask about the Saipan-Wide Environmental Enhancement Program.
DPW asked the public to report suspected illegal dumping. BECQ can be reached at (670) 664-8500 or (670) 664-8501. The CNMI Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management can be reached at (670) 322-8002.
