Tinian town hall set on BOEM seabed mineral RFI as CNMI comment period continues

SAIPAN — Gov. David M. Apatang and Lt. Gov. Dennis James C. Mendiola are urging CNMI residents to take part in the federal public comment process tied to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s Request for Information and Interest on potential seabed mineral leasing offshore the commonwealth.

The Office of the Governor announced a Tinian town hall intended to provide information on the RFI and allow residents to share feedback. The meeting is scheduled for this Friday, January 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Tinian Conference Center at the Bar-K Diner.

The RFI is described as the first step in a federal process that could eventually lead to a future lease sale for critical minerals on the Outer Continental Shelf offshore the CNMI.

“This process gives our people the opportunity to be informed and to help shape decisions that may affect our islands and our future,” Apatang said, encouraging Tinian residents to attend, learn more, and make their voices heard.

The announcement lists a public comment deadline for BOEM to receive comments, information, and indications of interest, and provides two submission options: through the federal rulemaking portal at Regulations.gov by searching BOEM-2025-0351, or by mail to BOEM’s Pacific Region Office of Strategic Resources in Camarillo, California.
