PSS Aligns with Federal Orders on Gender Policy, Sports, and Facilities

SAIPAN – The CNMI Public School System has announced it will comply with new federal executive orders from President Donald J. Trump that redefine sex in education policies and restrict participation in girls’ and women’s sports.

In a memo issued this week, PSS Commissioner of Education Lawrence F. Camacho said the system is aligning policies and practices with the directives, noting that non-compliance could put federal funding at risk.

Executive Order 14168 requires all federal agencies and recipients of federal funding, including public schools, to use “sex” as a biological definition, replacing references to gender identity in policies, programs, and documents.

Another order directs agencies to rescind funding from schools that allow male participation in women’s sports, which federal officials say deprives women and girls of fair athletic opportunities. The policy carries direct consequences for athletic eligibility and funding across the nation.

PSS said it will operate under the executive orders as its guiding framework while a formal policy is being drafted for review by the State Board of Education. Officials pledged to provide updates as implementation moves forward.

Despite the mandate, the memo stated that PSS remains committed to providing safe and supportive learning environments for students while ensuring compliance with federal law.
