NWS: Showers tonight, drier midweek for CNMI; winds and hazardous surf risk rises this weekend

SAIPAN — The National Weather Service office in Guam says a surface trough east of the Marianas is expected to bring scattered light to moderate showers to the CNMI tonight and Wednesday, followed by drier conditions through Friday.

NWS said showers and winds are expected to increase across the Marianas this weekend as a shear line to the north drops southward over the islands.

Seas and surf are expected to remain elevated, with seas of 6 to 9 feet the next few days, then building this weekend as winds increase, according to NWS. The agency warned seas and surf could become hazardous, with a high risk of rip currents along north- and east-facing exposures by Saturday, continuing through Sunday.

In its drought outlook, NWS said drier weather prevails north of 10N, with abnormally dry conditions across the CNMI, and that rainfall patterns over the next few weeks favor below-normal rainfall for most locations east of 140E.

NWS also reported no suspect areas for tropical weather development in its area of responsibility through the next week.
