NMC food drive collects more than 300 donations for Proa Pantry

SAIPANI — Northern Marianas College recently collected more than 300 canned and dry goods for its Proa Pantry through a campus-wide food drive led by the Office of the President, the Associated Students of NMC (ASNMC), and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership (OSAL). The effort ran throughout October and November.

The food drive was organized in response to the temporary suspension of Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP) benefits during the recent federal government shutdown. Although distributions have resumed, NMC said the event was aimed at replenishing resources and supporting students and families who continue to face challenges with food access.

NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD, commended the campus community for stepping up during a difficult time, calling the food drive “a powerful reminder that at NMC, we don’t let anyone in our community face hardship alone.” He said many students and families are still feeling the impact of the shutdown and current economic conditions, and praised students, faculty, staff, and alumni for helping ensure the Proa Pantry remains a reliable source of support.

Students, employees, alumni, and other supporters donated a wide range of non-perishable, student-friendly food items including canned proteins, soups, rice, pasta, cereal, and ready-to-eat meals.

“We’re grateful to everyone who donated and helped restock the Proa Pantry,” said ASNMC President Maria Daniella Sablan. “This outpouring of support ensures we can continue providing free assistance to students facing food insecurity, especially during this period of increased need.”

The Proa Pantry remains open to all NMC students, providing free access to essential food items and basic supplies. Donations are accepted year-round at OSAL, and the College is encouraging ongoing support to help sustain students and their families.
