Masters Athletes Shine at NMI Track Meet, Proving Age Is No Barrier to Strength

Saipan, CNMI – From sprinting to javelin, seasoned competitors lit up the Oleai Sports Complex this week as the Northern Marianas Masters Athletics event returned for another celebration of perseverance, power, and sportsmanship.

Held June 12–13, the two-day event brought together local athletes ages 30 to over 65, competing in track and field events that showcased both fierce determination and community spirit. Organized by Northern Marianas Athletics (NMA), the annual meet continues to draw a growing number of participants and fans.

“We were thrilled to see so many dedicated athletes pushing themselves and supporting one another,” said Greg Borja, representing NMA. “Masters Athletics is about more than medals—it’s about passion, health, and community. This year, we saw record participation and a new wave of local interest.”

Sprint Highlights

In the 60m sprint, Geza Baka III and Simon Necesito tied for gold in the M30 division with identical 8.95 finishes, while Nick Gross (M45) and Tony Ichiuo (M60) each dominated their age categories. On the women’s side, Krista Hawley (W55) clocked a winning 9.85, and Ronsa Gross (W45) won with 11.13.

For the 100m, Orrin Pharmin (M35) posted the fastest time of the meet at 12.53. Geza Baka III also claimed double gold, topping both the 60m and 100m in his division.

Distance and Field Events

The 5000m saw strong performances from Akiko Miller (W55) with a time of 21:32.59 and Chad Taflinger (M40) with 22:27.69.

In the javelin throw, Nick Gross (M45) launched a 41.14-meter throw to take gold, while Tony Ichiuo (M60) dominated his division with 36.60 meters. NMA’s own Greg Borja won the M50 category with a 17.60m throw.
