Guam DYA says two 16-year-olds escaped Mangilao youth facility; one recaptured, search continues for other

MANGILAO, Guam — Guam’s Department of Youth Affairs said two 16-year-old males escaped custody from the DYA Youth Correctional Facility in Mangilao at about 12:40 p.m. on February 18, after climbing over barbed-wire fencing.

DYA said a DYA officer was injured while attempting to apprehend the youths and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Within about two hours, the Guam Police Department apprehended one of the juveniles, while the search for the remaining escapee was continuing as of the agency’s release.

DYA said the juvenile still at large has been in DYA custody since September 4, 2024, and is being held on multiple charges, including beyond control, burglary, criminal trespass, conspiracy to commit theft of property, theft of property, and criminal mischief.

DYA said the public should contact the agency at (671) 735-5022 with information on the juvenile’s whereabouts. DYA provided the following description: male, 16, 5’4”, 148 pounds, CHamoru, brown eyes, black hair, last seen wearing a black polo shirt, black shorts, and no footwear. DYA said the minor has a scar and birthmark on the left side of his abdomen.
