MANGILAO, Guam — As Guam heads into the drier season, the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Forestry and Soil Resources Division is asking residents not to burn Christmas trees and is offering a free alternative aimed at reducing wildfire risk.
Beginning Friday, Jan. 9 through Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, residents can drop off real Christmas trees at the warehouse parking lot diagonally across from the DOAG main building. The trees will be processed in a kiln to create biochar, which DOAG plans to use as a soil amendment for its native tree nursery and restoration sites. In exchange, residents will receive a native tree seedling.
To participate, DOAG said trees must be completely free of ornaments, lights, tinsel, and other decorations, and artificial trees will not be accepted. Exchange hours (trees will not be accepted outside these times):
Fri., Jan. 9: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Sat.–Sun., Jan. 10–11: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Mon.–Fri., Jan. 12–16: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
