HAGÅTÑA — Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero placed Guam in Condition of Readiness 3 at 5 p.m. Friday as Tropical Storm Sinlaku intensifies toward the Marianas, warning that the system has the potential to reach Category 3 or 4 strength with winds around 120 mph at its center as it makes a very close approach to Guam Monday night into Tuesday.
Damaging winds of 39 mph or greater are expected within 48 hours. Conditions are expected to begin deteriorating around late Sunday, with ocean conditions worsening over the next 48 hours and heightened activity lingering into the following week. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay out of the water immediately.
“The latest forecast track shows an intensifying system, with potential to reach Category 3 or 4 status, around 120 mph, at its center as it makes a very close approach, passing near Guam Monday night into Tuesday,” Leon Guerrero said.
Lt. Governor Joshua F. Tenorio added a direct warning: “This storm has the potential to be very dangerous. Residents should start to prepare now.”
The governor is urging residents to clear drainage areas and unblock storm drains, remove loose debris from yards and store items that could become airborne, prepare an emergency kit with seven to ten days of food, water, medication, disinfectant and pet supplies, secure important documents in waterproof bags, review emergency plans including provisions for family members with disabilities or elderly dependents, and have a battery-operated or hand-crank radio available for emergency news.
