Floor leader Flores: backing retiree-linked measure is ‘a responsibility,’ calls for stronger systems

SAIPAN — House Floor Leader Marissa Flores said she is “not a fan” of the situation surrounding the government’s financing decision tied to retiree obligations, but said supporting the measure became “not just a decision, but a responsibility” because of its impact on the Commonwealth’s retirees and man’amko.

In a statement, Flores said lawmakers must ensure “going forward, we do better,” not only for retirees but also for people still waiting on land compensation, outstanding vendor payments, and other overdue obligations. She said the focus should be on strengthening and modernizing government systems so future generations inherit a stable and sustainable economy, rather than recurring debt and preventable crises.

Flores said the issue is “not about placing blame,” but about learning, improving, and committing to a better path for those who call the Marianas home. She said she and her colleagues remain committed to “meaningful, responsible progress” that honors the Commonwealth’s elders, addresses overdue obligations, and builds a future “our children can depend on.”
