DRT announces start of 2026 tax filing season; updated forms required

SAIPAN — The CNMI Department of Finance’s Division of Revenue and Taxation has announced the start of the 2026 tax filing season, urging taxpayers to use the most current tax forms and instructions available through the Department of Finance website.

DRT said taxpayers must use the most recent version of the forms, warning that prior-year forms used to report the current year will not be accepted.

DRT emphasized that taxpayers should file with DRT only if they are a bona fide CNMI resident. The division also encouraged early preparation, gathering income statements, deduction records, and prior-year returns to reduce errors and avoid last-minute problems.

For those expecting a refund, DRT recommended selecting direct deposit, saying it can reduce errors tied to mailing addresses. DRT also urged filers to double-check routing and account numbers to prevent delays.

DRT said common filing errors include incorrect Social Security numbers, names that don’t match Social Security card records, math mistakes, and missing schedules. Taxpayers were also reminded to report income exactly as shown on W-2CM, W-2, 1099, and other statements, and to keep copies for their records.

DRT is also encouraging employers to submit information returns electronically, citing improved accuracy and fewer processing errors. Filing specifications and instructions for the Electronic Filing System are available on the same forms page, according to DRT.
