67-year-old woman dies after being struck near Shell station in Puerto Rico

SAIPAN — A 67-year-old woman was pronounced dead Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle near the Shell gas station in Puerto Rico, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services reported.

DFEMS said a female caller reported witnessing the crash at about 7:29 a.m. Medic-2 and Engine-2 were dispatched from the Garapan Fire Station at 7:30 a.m., were en route at 7:32 a.m., and arrived at 7:36 a.m.

Responding units found the woman without a pulse and not breathing while cardiopulmonary resuscitation was being performed by two people. DFEMS said those individuals were a firefighter and a nurse.

DFEMS reported the vehicle’s operator was a firefighter who got out after the crash, performed a patient assessment, and began CPR. A nurse who happened to be driving by pulled over to assist. After one set of chest compressions by the firefighter, DFEMS said the nurse continued chest compressions while the firefighter provided rescue breaths via mouth-to-mouth.

The woman was transported to the Commonwealth Health Care Corporation Emergency Room, where DFEMS said she was pronounced deceased at 7:55 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation with the Department of Public Safety, DFEMS said.
