CNMI Opens Public Comment Period on 10-Year Wildlife Action Plan

SAIPAN – The CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife has released a draft version of its updated State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) and is inviting the public to provide input over the next 60 days.

The 2025–2035 plan outlines long-term conservation goals for the protection of fish and wildlife across the Northern Mariana Islands. It identifies species of greatest conservation need—based on biological, cultural, and economic factors—and proposes strategic actions to preserve the CNMI’s natural heritage.

Over 50 stakeholder meetings were held on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, including public forums and an online survey, to shape the plan. The draft builds upon the 2015 version and reflects input from residents, scientists, local officials, and partner agencies.

“This Wildlife Action Plan provides a roadmap for conserving our valuable fish and wildlife resources for the benefit of all CNMI citizens,” the Division said in a statement.

Residents can review the draft plan and submit comments online until August 16, 2025. The full draft is available at: https://dlnr.cnmi.gov/conservation-planning.html
