SAIPAN — The mayors of all three inhabited islands in the Commonwealth met with federal and local law enforcement representatives last week to discuss rising violent crime and drug activity, with officials identifying community reluctance to report crimes as a key challenge.
The roundtable, hosted by the Saipan Mayor’s Office, brought together Saipan Mayor Ramon “RB” Jose Blas Camacho with Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan and Rota Mayor Aubrey Hocog, who attended virtually. Representing federal law enforcement were FBI Agent Rick Bauer and Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Timothy Israel. Department of Public Safety Commissioner Anthony Macaranas and Captain Olopai represented local law enforcement.
Officials discussed rising instances of violent criminal behavior and increased drug-related activity from the perspective of each municipality. A shared concern across all three islands was the hesitancy of community members to report crimes due to fear of retaliation or personal reasons.
Saipan Mayor Camacho said the meeting establishes a foundation for a unified response to public safety challenges across the Commonwealth.
“A unified and collective approach empowers our residents to come forward and protect our communities,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
