SAIPAN — The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management office issued a Flood Watch Friday morning for Saipan, Tinian and Rota, warning residents that flash flooding remains possible from late tonight through Tuesday morning as a tropical disturbance interacts with a shear line over the Marianas.
The watch, issued at 7 a.m. and based on information from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, warns that several rounds of heavy to very heavy rainfall are possible through much of the coming week. Forecasters say the system could produce 5 to 10 inches of rain across the Marianas, with locally higher amounts.
Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, with additional flooding possible in poor drainage and urban areas. Forecasters noted that already-wet ground conditions from earlier this week mean flash flooding thresholds could be reached more easily than usual.
Governor David Apatang is advising residents across all three islands to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to act if flash flood warnings are issued. Those living near streams and rivers are urged to move items away from riverbanks and to ensure nearby storm drains are clear, particularly in low-lying areas.
