Governor Apatang, Lt. Gov. Mendiola issue statement on passing of Diego T. Benavente

SAIPAN — Gov. David M. Apatang and Lt. Gov. Dennis James C. Mendiola have issued a statement mourning the passing of former Lt. Gov. Diego Tenorio Benavente, calling his death “a profound loss for the Commonwealth” and for all who were touched by his leadership and humility.

In a release from the Office of the Governor, Apatang and Mendiola said Benavente passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after choosing to spend his final weeks at home in the Marianas “living each day with intention and purpose.”

“For more than three decades, Diego Benavente served the people of the CNMI with distinction,” the statement said, citing his roles as a member of the House of Representatives, three-term Speaker of the House, lieutenant governor, and respected community and regional leader. Guided by integrity and principled leadership, he was praised for championing education, environmental stewardship, and responsible governance.

“Diego served our Commonwealth with honor and heart. He was a mentor, a steady voice of reason, and a friend,” Apatang said, expressing gratitude “for his lifetime of service” and noting that his dedication and love for the Marianas helped shape the Commonwealth through pivotal moments, leaving a legacy that will “inspire and endure for generations.”

The governor and lieutenant governor extended their deepest condolences to Mrs. Vicky Benavente, their children, grandchildren, and the entire Benavente family, and said they join the people of the Marianas in prayer and remembrance “during this difficult time.” They also invited the entire Commonwealth to join them in mourning “the loss of this distinguished son of the Marianas.”
