Apatang, Mendiola mourn passing of Senior U.S. District Court Judge Alex R. Munson

SAIPAN — Gov. David M. Apatang and Lt. Gov. Dennis C. Mendiola issued a statement expressing condolences on the passing of Senior U.S. District Court Judge Alex R. Munson, calling his death “the end of an extraordinary chapter” in the CNMI’s legal history.

In their statement, Apatang and Mendiola said Munson’s decades of service to the people of the CNMI left an “enduring legacy,” beginning with his tenure as chief justice of the High Court of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and continuing through more than 20 years as chief judge of the District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands.

They said Munson’s leadership helped guide the federal court from its earliest stages into a modern institution that reflects the community’s values, resilience, and commitment to justice.

Apatang and Mendiola said Munson upheld the rule of law with integrity, fairness, and humanity, and approached cases with respect for the people and cultures of the Commonwealth and the broader Micronesian region.

They also described Munson as humble and civil, and credited him with a profound dedication to public service, saying he touched many lives through his decisions, mentorship, and belief in the principles of justice.

On behalf of the people of the Commonwealth, Apatang and Mendiola extended condolences to Munson’s loved ones and expressed gratitude for his service, saying the CNMI is “better, stronger, and more just because of him.”
