Guam secures new cruise route with Taiwan, eyes direct China Airlines flights

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has secured a new ocean liner cruise service from Kaohsiung, Taiwan that will bring up to 1,000 passengers per trip to the island, as part of a joint trade and investment mission that also produced a sister-city agreement and potential new air service.

During meetings with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai, Governor Leon Guerrero discussed the new cruise route, which will add hundreds of additional visitors to Guam with each voyage. Mayor Chen also committed to advocating for direct flights between Kaohsiung and Guam via China Airlines, a push that follows meetings the delegation held with China Airlines officials in Taipei earlier in the mission.

Guam and Kaohsiung have now executed a sister-city agreement establishing a framework for collaboration in tourism, trade, investment and cultural exchange.

The Taiwan mission, conducted jointly by the Guam Visitors Bureau, the Guam Economic Development Authority and the Guam International Airport Authority, has also included discussions on potential aquaculture and hydroponic investments in Guam. Both sectors are components of Taiwan’s high-tech industry, and any expansion to Guam would connect to the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio administration’s STEM training initiatives.

“Strengthening transportation links between Guam and Taiwan opens the door to greater tourism, trade, and investment opportunities,” Governor Leon Guerrero said. “These connections make it easier for visitors to experience Guam and for our island to build stronger partnerships across the region.”
