Across the Pacific, Eyes Turned Skyward for Tuesday Night’s Blood Moon

Saipan — From islands across the Pacific, people looked to the night sky Tuesday to catch a glimpse of the total lunar eclipse that turned the moon a deep red.

Known as a “blood moon,” the eclipse drew attention from communities across the region, including the Northern Mariana Islands, where the moon was clearly visible as Earth’s shadow moved across it. In Saipan, viewers watched the moon darken and take on its striking red hue during the total phase of the eclipse.

The celestial event offered a rare shared moment for people across the Pacific, with families, early risers, and night sky watchers pausing to look up as the moon changed color overhead.

This viewer-submitted photo captured that moment from Saipan, where the eclipse put on a dramatic display in the island’s night sky.
