Apatang, Leon Guerrero Hold Washington Talks on Marianas Conservation and Military Readiness

WASHINGTON, D.C. — CNMI Governor David Apatang and Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero joined federal officials in Washington for high-level talks focused on balancing conservation priorities, economic development, and military readiness across the Marianas.

The discussions included representatives from the War and Interior Departments and centered on what federal officials described as a “Year One Action Plan” tied to a longer-term effort involving native species viability, regulatory efficiencies, and shared resources across local and federal agencies.

The briefing focused on aligning conservation goals in Guam and the CNMI with national defense priorities, while also supporting local economic development.

Leon Guerrero said the Mariana Islands Conservation Strategy is a commitment to both environmental protection and the region’s future, and said coordination with federal partners is intended to improve species populations while helping expedite consultation processes tied to military construction and economic development.

The talks highlighted the strategic importance of the Mariana archipelago from Guam to Maug and Uracas (Farallon de Pajaros), the CNMI’s two northernmost islands.

Officials said future talks will be shaped by project timelines and efforts to align investments in ways that maximize conservation outcomes while preserving military operational flexibility.
