SAIPAN — Acting Governor Dennis James C. Mendiola met with Major General Thomas M. Sherman, commander of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, and other senior military leaders on February 19 to discuss strengthening collaboration between the ongoing military buildup and the CNMI, according to the Office of the Governor.
The Governor’s Office said the discussion focused on expanding opportunities for CNMI vendors to participate in military-related projects, including ways to improve access, capacity-building and coordination so local businesses are better positioned for procurement and contracting tied to Department of Defense investments.
The meeting also explored how the Department of Defense can support initiatives that align with national defense priorities while advancing infrastructure development, workforce readiness and long-term economic sustainability in the Commonwealth. Both sides emphasized the importance of ensuring military investments generate shared benefits for local communities and contribute positively to the CNMI’s economic future, the Governor’s Office said.
Mendiola said the administration is committed to transparent, collaborative partnerships that respect local priorities and create lasting opportunities for residents. Military leaders reaffirmed their interest in continued engagement with the CNMI government and local stakeholders to identify practical pathways for cooperation and mutual growth.
