Guam moving forward on Humåtak open-air gym project; LWCF grant totals $1.28 million

HAGÅTÑA, Guam — Acting Governor Josh Tenorio, Humåtak Mayor Johnny Quinata, and Guam Department of Public Works officials conducted a site visit in Humåtak on February 17 to begin preliminary preparation work for one of five new open-air gymnasiums funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Officials said the Humåtak site is located next to the Humåtak Fire Station, where DPW engineers began plotting construction markers. The total LWCF grant award for the Humåtak gym project is $1.28 million, secured by the Guam State Clearinghouse.

The project is expected to include a covered open-air gymnasium, multi-purpose regulation-size courts for basketball and volleyball, an outdoor micro skatepark up to 1,500 square feet, and restroom facilities.

Tenorio said Humåtak athletes have excelled despite the village never having a permanent, protected gymnasium, and said the administration is moving forward with the process. Quinata said the village has been waiting its turn and thanked the administration for securing funding to make the project a reality.

In addition to Humåtak, LWCF funding has been secured for four additional new open-air gymnasiums to be located in Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Assan-Ma’ina, Piti, and Inalåhan. Collectively, the five projects total more than $5 million.
