Fish Fest 2026 to spotlight Guam’s fishing traditions, sustainability, and local seafood at CHamoru Village

HAGÅTÑA, GUAM — A celebration of Guam’s fishing heritage, local seafood, and sustainable practices returns this month as the University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant hosts Fish Fest 2026 on Saturday, February 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at CHamoru Village.

Organized through the Guihan for Guåhan program, the family-friendly event is designed to bring the community together around one of Guam’s most important cultural and natural resources: fish. Organizers say the festival blends education and entertainment, offering hands-on experiences alongside friendly competition and island-style food.

Planned activities include a keleguen guihan competition, a talaya (cast net) throwing contest, and opportunities for residents to purchase fresh local catch. Throughout the day, festivalgoers can also explore informational displays from partner organizations, browse local vendors, enjoy live music, and take part in interactive activities and giveaways.

UOG CIS & Sea Grant Director Austin Shelton, Ph.D., said the event continues to build on last year’s momentum, creating a space where culture, science, and community intersect. He noted that Fish Fest serves not only as a celebration, but also as a way to share knowledge about fishing traditions and the importance of Guam’s marine resources.

The Guihan for Guåhan program focuses on promoting sustainable fisheries, supporting local fishers, and strengthening food security through education and community engagement. Program lead Leilani Naden said Fish Fest is meant to be inclusive, welcoming everyone from experienced fishers to families who simply enjoy learning about and eating local seafood.

Community members interested in joining the keleguen competition, participating as vendors, or learning more about the event can contact Sablan at (671) 488-8223. Event updates will also be shared on Instagram at @guam_fish, @uogcis, and @uogseagrant.

Organizers say Fish Fest 2026 is shaping up to be a vibrant showcase of island flavors, fishing culture, and Guam’s enduring connection to the sea.
