Joeten-Kiyu Public Library to host Outdoor Community Sensory Night for Disability Rights Awareness Month

SAIPAN — The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library will host an Outdoor Community Sensory Night on Friday, February 20, inviting families of children with special needs and disabilities to a free, sensory-friendly evening in celebration of Disability Rights Awareness Month.

The event is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the JKPL parking lot and is designed to create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment where families can connect and enjoy activities at their own pace.

According to the library, Sensory Night began in 2023 with the goal of ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and included. This year’s event moves outdoors to provide additional space for movement and exploration, while still offering access to a dedicated quiet area inside the library for sensory breaks.

The evening will feature local food trucks, sensory games and interactive toys, family-friendly music and entertainment, and a quiet sensory break area inside the library. Organizers said the outdoor setting is intended to create a relaxed, festive atmosphere for children, caregivers, siblings, and extended family members.

“Outdoor Community Sensory Night is more than just an event — it’s a space where families can relax, connect, and enjoy an evening designed with their needs in mind,” said JKPL Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi.

Disability Rights Awareness Month is observed each February to promote understanding, inclusion, and respect for individuals with disabilities, while recognizing the progress made since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ongoing need for accessible, inclusive communities.

The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library said the event is free and open to the community. Additional information on library programs and services is available at www.cnmilib.org and through JKPL’s social media platforms.
