SAIPAN — Governor David M. Apatang and Lieutenant Governor Dennis James C. Mendiola issued a statement mourning the passing of Lino Mettao Olopai, describing him as a revered cultural leader, historian, and advocate for preserving Carolinian heritage and identity.
In the statement released by the Office of the Governor, the two leaders said Olopai devoted his life to safeguarding the wisdom of ancestors and ensuring it continued to guide future generations. They highlighted his work as a cultural historian, navigator, educator, and language advocate, calling him a “vital bridge” between tradition and progress.
They also pointed to his leadership in advancing Carolinian orthography, his service on the Language Policy Commission, and his dedication to cultural education they said helped ensure indigenous voices in the CNMI remain “strong, vibrant, and enduring.”
The Governor and Lieutenant Governor extended condolences to the Olopai family and to the many students, colleagues, and community members they said were enriched by Olopai’s knowledge, humility, and generosity of spirit.
They said Olopai’s legacy will continue to guide the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and emphasized that the CNMI’s strength lies in its roots—and in the responsibility to carry those roots forward with pride.
