SAIPAN – The people of the Commonwealth woke to the news of the passing of Governor Arnold Indalecio Palacios, a longtime public servant and the sitting governor of the Northern Mariana Islands. He passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, July 23, surrounded by family. He was 69 years old.
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor released an official statement this morning confirming the news and honoring Governor Palacios’ legacy, which spanned more than 30 years in public office.
Palacios held nearly every top legislative and executive position in the CNMI government, including Speaker of the House, Senate President, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor. His administration focused on fiscal reform, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and strengthening public institutions.
“Governor Palacios leaves behind a legacy defined by resilience, perseverance, humility, visionary leadership, and a deep love for the Commonwealth and its people,” the statement reads.
Acting Governor David Apatang, who assumes executive duties, expressed his grief in a message to the people. “I am deeply in sorrow and I join Wella and the families’ grief during this time of mourning,” he said, referring to First Lady Wella Palacios.
Details on memorial services and public tributes will be shared in the coming days. The CNMI flag will fly at half-staff until further notice.
Governor Palacios is survived by his wife, Wella, their children and grandchildren, and extended family.
The CNMI now prepares to both mourn and honor the life of a leader many saw as a steady and unifying force during times of adversity.
